Why This Recipe Stands Out
Valentine’s Day is just around the corner which means we’re taking out all our favorite strawberry recipes. Here’s why we love making these Strawberry Nutella Hand Pies:
- The Flavors: A golden, buttery crust surrounding fresh strawberries and creamy, hazelnut Nutella is truly a combo to be reckoned with.
- Portable: While we love a good full-sized pie (like this Fresh Strawberry Pie), there’s just something irresistible about a cute, mini treat that’s easy to hold.
- Versatile: Although this is one of our favorite Valentine’s Day desserts, these hand pies can be made all year round; simply choose any shape that suits the occasion.
- Great Gifts: Strawberry Nutella Hand Pies make great gifts for friends and family. They’re also perfect for passing around at birthdays, holidays, and parties.
- Quick and Easy: This dessert comes together in just 35 minutes and is super easy to make.
Key Recipe Ingredients
- Pie Crust – We love using this flaky, butter crust from our recipe for The Best Apple Pie. But for a quicker option, you could always use store bought crust.
- Nutella – One jar of Nutella brings that perfectly creamy, chocolatey, hazelnut flavor to the table.
- Strawberry Preserves – Strawberry preserves add extra strawberry flavor to the filling and just the right amount of sweetness to these pies.
- Fresh Strawberries – Make sure the strawberries are red all the way through – it’s also okay if they’re a little overripe.
Substitutions And Variations
Like we mentioned earlier, Strawberry Nutella Hand Pies are super versatile. The filling options are endless. Here’s some of our favorite variations:
- Gluten-Free: You can easily make these hand pies gluten-free by substituting the crust for either homemade or store bought gluten-free crust.
- Fruit: Try mixing up the chopped fruits; apples, peaches, or blueberries would be amazing. For more ideas, check out these 29 different variations.
- Other Fillings: Are you stumbling upon this recipe in the fall? Check out our Pumpkin Hand Pies recipe. We also love whipping up these Strawberry Cheesecake Hand Pies when we’re looking for something without the chocolate.
- Shapes: Feel free to opt for simple circle or square cutouts for the dough.
Step-By-Step Recipe Instructions
- Roll out half of chilled pie dough. Cut out desired shapes, re-roll, and repeat.
- Spread Nutella onto bottom layer of crust, scoop the fresh strawberries on the Nutella, and dollop preserves on top of the strawberries.
- Cover the filling with the top crusts and seal edges very tightly with a fork.
- Cut slits in the tops of the hand pies. Then brush beaten egg over them and sprinkle coarse sugar on top.
- Repeat the whole process with the other half of dough.

How To Prep Ahead
These hand pies can be prepped ahead in a few different ways. Here’s our some of our favorite ways to make this recipe even easier:
- Crust: If you’re making the crust from scratch, feel free to make it a day or two in advance and store it in the fridge. Just take it out early, and let it sit at room temperature until it softens enough to work with.
- Strawberries: The strawberries can be chopped up a day in advance and stored in the fridge until ready to use.
- Freeze Unbaked: For a super easy baking day, completely assemble the hand pies and freeze them on a baking tray until they harden. Then transfer them to an airtight container. When you’re ready to bake, just thaw them and bake like normal.
- Freeze Baked: Baked Strawberry Nutella Hand Pies will keep well in the freezer for up to 3 months. Just make sure to let them cool completely before transferring them to the freezer.
Commonly Asked Questions
Store strawberry Nutella hand pies in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 4 days. These also keep well in the freezer for up to 3 months.
To help seal your hand pies, use a fork to firmly press the top and bottom edges together. Make sure not to over-fill the pies as that will make it very hard to seal them. If you’re really concerned about them holding together well, feel free to brush a little bit of the egg wash on the edges between the layers before pressing them together.
You’ll know the hand pies are done baking when the tops turn golden brown. You may also see some of the strawberry preserves bubble through the slits.
This recipe works best with hand pies. However, if you’re looking for a seriously delicious full-sized strawberry pie recipe, check out this Fresh Strawberry Pie recipe.
If your dough’s cracking when you’re trying to roll it out, it may mean you need more moisture in the dough. Add one tablespoon of water at a time until you can work with it. Also, if your dough’s too cold, it will be very difficult to roll. So, try letting it sit at room temperature for a bit to get softer if you’re having this problem.

Strawberry Nutella Hand Pies
Ingredients
- 1 recipe for double pie crust, for crust portion
- 1 jar Nutella, see notes
- 1 jar pure strawberry preserves, see notes
- 8-10 ripe strawberries, chopped
- 1 egg, beaten, for egg wash
- coarse sugar for garnish
Instructions
- On a lightly floured surface, roll out half of the chilled pie dough to 1/8 inch thick. (Keep other half in the fridge while you work.)
- Using cookie cutter, cut out desired shapes. Alternatively, use a knife to cut dough into squares or rectangles. Continue re-rolling dough scraps until first half of the dough is used up.
- Spoon 1/4 to 1/2 tsp Nutella onto bottom crust of hand pies. Spoon 1/4 to 1/2 tsp chopped strawberries over the Nutella. Dollop 1/4 to 1/2 tsp strawberry preserves on top. Keep in mind that the more filling you use, the trickier it may be to seal the crust together.
- Place top crusts on hand pies, and take care to seal them tightly. Use a fork to press down hard on edges to finish the seal.
- Using a sharp knife, cut little slits over the tops of hand pies. Brush each pie with beaten egg, and sprinkle with coarse sugar. Gently place pies on a parchment lined baking sheet.
- Repeat with remaining half of pie dough.
- Bake at 350F for 15-20 minutes, or just until tops are golden brown.
- Let cool completely before serving.
Notes
- The exact amounts of hazelnut spread and jam used will vary, as it depends on the shape/size of your pies.
- Make sure to chop the strawberries extra small (about the size of peas) to make them easy to fit in the hand pies.
