Homemade Ranch Seasoning (All Natural)

This easy homemade ranch seasoning mix is all natural and great for recipes that call for ranch seasoning! No more store-bought ranch packets with chemicals.

homemade ranch 2Hope you all had a wonderful Christmas!  We were surprised with a white Christmas after all. Not quite enough for sledding, but look out. We might be knee deep in fresh powder by tomorrow.

By New Year’s, The Littles should be crushing the hills on their new sleds. Me too. I’m totally excited to rip down some hills. If I don’t bang up my knee first. Or slam into a tree.

Speaking of New Year’s…this is limbo week with all the food. There’s the NYE party dips, chips, apps, and drinks. Combined with the January health gig.

Which directly ties in with this Homemade Ranch Seasoning. There are mountains of yummy recipes that request a packet of store bought ranch seasoning. I love all those recipes — minus the chems. Like, I really don’t like the tongue-tie ingredients.

But all is not lost. Hardly.

homemade ranch3This Homemade Ranch Seasoning is all-natural, with pantry spices you probably already have in your kitchen this very moment. You might not have buttermilk powder on hand, but it’s easily purchased at major grocery stores or online.

I got a big bag of it online because I know I’ll always make my own ranch seasoning from now and forever more.

Call me quirky, but I smile at that bag of buttermilk.

A Glass Jar of Seasoning

There are several recipes for ranch seasoning in cookbooks and online, but I kept tweaking, twisting, and tinkering until we got a mixture that was flavorful enough for big taste buds. It’s gotta rival the store bought packet, right?

This DIY ranch seasoning can be used to make ranch dressing (obvi) or sour cream dip or put into recipes with potatoes, chicken, etc. etc. It’s 100% customizable to your ranch needs.

Here’s to the limbo-est diet week of the year, full of dips and apps with some healthy kicked in. If you’re looking for more homemade dressing options, try this creamy caesar dressing, next.

Love making my own mixes! I found a source for dry buttermilk powder that can be kept at room temperature, but it comes in a 2-pound container. I use it up quickly, because I also use it for baking. The company also makes a White Cheese Powder that is great for Mac ‘n’ Cheese. I buy it through Amazon, Hoosier Hill Farm.

I found a source online for buttermilk powder that does not need refrigeration, it only comes in a 2 lb container, but I use it a lot for baking as well. Didn’t know if I should post the name. They also make a white cheese powder as well, which is great for making Mac ‘n’ Cheese.

How should this be stored? What is the shelf life? This is going to be a great help.

      • chewoutloud

Hi, Marlyn! You can store in airtight glass container with lid or strong Ziploc baggie. You can keep it for a month at room temp or in freezer for longer. So happy you like this!

I have finally found the perfect homemade ranch dressing with many thanks to you! This is perfect. Can you tell me, does bulk powdered buttermilk or whole milk have to be refrigerated to keep fresh? Thank you for the recipe and any insight on bulk powdered milks! : )

      • chewoutloud

Yay! So happy you like this so much, Chey! I use it all the time and love it 🙂 I do keep my bulk powdered buttermilk in fridge, as my package recommends it. I do think it keeps fresh longer that way. Same for milk. 🙂

I’ve got about 10 recipes printed that ask for ranch dressing or seasoning! I’ve not even found the packeted stuff in UK shops, so have just been using a hodge podge of dried herbs. Is the Kosher salt just for a better flavour? Thanks!

      • chewoutloud

Hi, Martin! Yes, the kosher salt is for better flavor. It’s also less salty than table salt. If you use table salt, use less of it. Enjoy and Happy New Year! 🙂

Hi. Am I to add liquid buttermilk in addition to the powder?
If I remember correctly, the packaged dressing asks for mayo and milk. Is there a reason why you use buttermilk or can I use milk?
Thanks for this recipe. I love the packaged version rather than the bottled and am looking forward to making this.

Hi, Carol! No liquid is added to this seasoning mix; all dry powder ingredients for the dry seasoning mix. If you’re using the dry seasoning mix to make your own ranch dressing, I add liquid buttermilk to make it more tangy. However, you can definitely use regular milk and add a splash of lemon juice for that tang. Enjoy and hope you love it!
